The March 4 event will also focus on innovations in cardiology, with a presentation by
Dr. Kendall Waters, a Research Scientist at the start-up Silicon Valley
Medical Instruments, Inc.
Dr. Waters will talk on “Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Therapy: Cardiovascular Applications.” He is an expert in ultrasound, with particular experience in the interaction of ultrasound and tissue for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. He has worked previously at Advanced Technology Laboratory of Volcano Corp, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France. Dr. Waters received his PhD from Washington University in St. Louis.

| Title | Minimally Invasive Image-Guided Therapy: Cardiovascular Applications |
| Description | Image-guided therapy (IGT) involves the integration of multiple medical device technologies and convergence with biotechnology for particular applications. IGT aims to help the physician improve efficacy and reduce morbidity of interventions by providing intra-operative image based anatomic and physiologic information in real time. The interventional cardiology and electrophysiology segments incorporate a diversity of IGT technologies for the treatment of numerous diseases, including coronary artery disease, structural heart disease, and cardiac arrhythmias. The dynamic and growing use of IGT technologies in these cardiovascular spaces is driven in part by an aging population, current treatments having poor efficacy, cost factors, and reductions in complications and recovery times. The state of the art continues to evolve as interventionalists and medical device manufacturers advance both technique and device in the pursuit of better clinical outcomes. This seminar comprises an overview of minimally invasive image-guided therapy for cardiovascular applications with emphasis on ultrasound-based image guidance technologies. |
