Medical imaging is one of the most promising areas of research where advanced machine learning technologies can make a real difference in patient outcomes. Recent advances allow machine learning algorithms to correctly identify breast cancer from mammograms years before a radiologist can find the same cancers with the naked eye, as well as reduce the number of false positives that are costly for clinics and stressful for patients. But as with any new technology that deals with healthcare, there are regulations in place, designed to protect patients, which can slow the ability for innovative startups to bring their products to market. This field that is ripe for venture capital investment, but prospective investors should keep several things in mind as they evaluate investment opportunities. These include considerations around single-payer vs. multi-payer healthcare systems, variations in global regulatory environments, data privacy (HIPAA) laws, and more. In this presentation, we will discuss some of the most exciting advancements in medical imaging, as well as accelerators and inhibitors to bringing solutions to clinicians and their patients.
